8 - The King's well
This was undoubtedly the most important communal well. It stood at the intersection of Rue Basse (Rue Salengro), Rue Haute (Rue Jules Blaizet), and Rue de la Montagne (Rue Paul Bert).
In 1445, the Canons of Autun, who owned Rue Haute and the Chapter House, sued the Abbots of Saint Bénigne, owners of Rue Basse, because they had leaned on the well's rim to administer justice.
After the judgment, it was decided that justice could be administered at this spot; both parties could sit on the rim facing their respective properties to judge.
